Not all goods can enter South Africa freely. Certain products require an import permit from ITAC (International Trade Administration Commission) or other regulatory bodies before they can be cleared through customs.
When Do You Need an Import Permit?
ITAC Import Permits
Required for:
- Second-hand goods — Clothing, machinery, vehicles, electronics
- Certain agricultural products — Poultry, sugar, wheat
- Textiles and clothing (quantitative restrictions)
- Tyres (certain types)
Other Regulatory Permits
| Product | Authority |
|---|---|
| Foodstuffs | Dept. of Health / DAFF |
| Chemicals and hazardous substances | Dept. of Environmental Affairs |
| Pharmaceutical products | SAHPRA |
| Firearms | SA Police Service |
| Animals/wildlife products | DAFF / DEA |
| Plants and seeds | DAFF (phytosanitary) |
| Radiation-emitting devices | Dept. of Health |
| Electronics (safety) | NRCS |
How to Apply
- Check if your product requires a permit — V & S Freight can verify this using your HS code
- Prepare your application — Product details, sample invoices, intended use
- Submit to ITAC (or relevant authority) — Online or via their offices
- Processing time — ITAC permits typically take 2-6 weeks
- Permit issued — Valid for the specified quantity and time period
Important Notes
- Apply BEFORE your goods ship — Without a permit, customs will not release your goods
- Permits are product and quantity specific — Don't assume one permit covers all your imports
- Permits have expiry dates — Renew before they expire
- Second-hand goods almost always require a permit — This is a common surprise for first-time importers
How V & S Freight Helps
We check permit requirements for every import as part of our customs clearing process. If a permit is needed, we'll advise you well before your goods arrive.
