Who Needs to Register?

- Customs clearing agents (licensed separately)
- Manufacturers with rebate or drawback entitlements
Note: Personal imports under R50,000 don't always require registration (handled differently), but commercial importers must register.
Registration Requirements
For Individuals
- Valid South African ID or passport
- Proof of residential address
- Tax clearance certificate (tax compliance status)
- Proof of banking details
For Companies
- Company registration documents (CIPC)
- Director's IDs
- Tax clearance certificate
- Proof of business address
- Banking details
- VAT registration number (if applicable)
- Good standing with SARS (e-filing)
Step-by-Step Registration Process
- Ensure SARS e-Filing profile is active — Register on SARS eFiling if not already
- Prepare documentation — Gather all required documents listed above
- Complete DA 185 form — Customs client registration form
- Submit to SARS — via SARS branch or appointed customs office
- SARS review — Processing takes 1-4 weeks
- Customs code issued — Your unique customs registration code is assigned
Once registered, this code is used on all customs entries — imports and exports.
