Bill of Lading — What It Is & Why It Matters

Bill of Lading — What It Is & Why It Matters

The Bill of Lading (B/L or BoL) is the single most important document in sea freight. It serves three critical functions: receipt of goods, contract of carriage, and document of title. Without it, you cannot collect your cargo.

What Does a Bill of Lading Do?

Function Description
Receipt Confirms the shipping line received your cargo
Contract Evidence of the carriage agreement between shipper and carrier
Title Proves ownership — whoever holds the original B/L owns the goods

Types of Bill of Lading

Original Bill of Lading (OBL)

The traditional paper document. Three originals are issued. You need at least one original to collect your cargo at Durban Port. This is the most secure form but requires physical courier of documents.

Telex Release / Express Release

The shipper surrenders the original B/L at origin. The shipping line then releases the cargo at destination without requiring an original document. Faster than OBL — no need to courier physical documents.

Sea Waybill

A non-negotiable document. Named consignee can collect without presenting original documents. Simplest option for shipments where trust exists between buyer and seller.
